An inverted S-Curve has the opposite effect and reduces contrast. These extremes give a wide range of possibility to the photographer specializing in monochrome images. Fig. 9.13 illustrates how varying the position of the curve between an S-Curve and inverted S-Curve adjusts contrast values within the image.

Another advantage of Curves over other methods is that it is possible to create effects that would be impossible to recreate with a single linear slider. Thus far, the examples featured have only added one or two points to the curve. It is possible to add up to sixteen points and to manipulate independently the values of the tones that these points represent. The repositioning of the anchor points can create unusual effects as tonal relationships are remapped from the original exposure (Fig. 9.14).
